About Denzel Valentine

Denzel Valentine was born on November 16, 1993, in Lansing, Michigan — a city where basketball is more than a game, and where his path was quietly forming long before the spotlight arrived.

Basketball was the language of the Valentine household. His father, Carlton Valentine, a former Michigan State player in the 1980s, passed down more than fundamentals — he instilled discipline, toughness, and respect for the game. Coaching became a second calling for Carlton, and Denzel grew up learning basketball not only as a player, but as a student of leadership, preparation, and accountability. His older brother, Drew Valentine, would follow a parallel path, rising through the coaching ranks and eventually becoming head coach at Loyola University Chicago — further cementing basketball as the family’s foundation.

At J.W. Sexton High School in Lansing, Denzel quickly emerged as a complete talent. More than a scorer, he was a leader — a player who controlled tempo, elevated teammates, and influenced every possession. His versatility and vision separated him early, marking him as one of Michigan’s most respected prospects.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Denzel committed to Michigan State University, where under legendary head coach Tom Izzo, he developed inside one of college basketball’s most demanding cultures. Each season sharpened him — mentally, physically, and emotionally — as he grew into a leader within the program.

By his senior season (2015–2016), Denzel delivered one of the most complete seasons in Michigan State history. Averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.8 assists, he led the Spartans with poise and intelligence, earning college basketball’s highest honors, including National Player of the Year recognition and unanimous First-Team All-American status. He became the embodiment of Spartan basketball — tough, unselfish, and relentless.

His collegiate success carried him into the NBA, where he was selected 14th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls. Over five seasons in Chicago, Denzel established himself as a versatile contributor known for his shooting touch, basketball IQ, and ability to impact winning. His 2017–18 season, averaging 10.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists across 77 games, reflected his adaptability at the highest level.

What defines Denzel Valentine’s career, however, is not only where he’s played — but how he’s embraced every chapter. After additional NBA opportunities and time in the G League, he continued his journey overseas, where his game expanded on the global stage.

In Australia’s NBL with the Sydney Kings, Denzel became a central presence, proving his skillset translated seamlessly beyond the NBA. In 2024, he joined Olimpia Milano, capturing the Italian Scudetto and adding a championship to his résumé in one of Europe’s most competitive environments. He later moved to Pallacanestro Trieste, where during the 2024–25 season he delivered one of his most efficient and impactful performances yet — leading with confidence, experience, and composure.
